The History of Vulcan Lodge #229, Walnut, Kansas.

Vulcan Lodge #229, Walnut, Kansas was chartered on February 20, 1884. Per the annual report sent to the Grand Lodge of Kansas on January 7, 1884; the Lodge membership was as follows:

The following are highlights taken from the minutes of the Lodge record book beginning with June 22, 1918. The lodge had stated communications on the Saturday on or before the full moon. The first minutes were from the meeting on June 22, 1918 with James A. Martin as Master and James E. Miller as Secretary. Martin owned the Walnut Eagle newspaper and Miller was the town postmaster. At this meeting they approved the use of the Lodge Hall by the Red Cross. Other events of note from the record book are listed below.

The following is taken from the 1922 Lodge Directory printed by the Walnut Eagle with photos of all lodge officers. The lodge initiation fee was $40.00; $15.00 was to accompany the petition, $15.00 was for the Entered Apprentice degree, $10.00 was for the Fellow Craft degree, and there was no fee for the Master Mason degree. Note during the years of the Great Depression many of the members were suspended for non-payment of dues at one time or another. Most of those suspended were reinstated after 1937.

Aug. 24 - Lodge Hall burnt down. The fire started in the old opera building below the temple and spread fast. It burnt the lodge hall and post office and everything there in.
Aug. 26 - Post office representative met with Secretary Harry Kennedy and Lee Roy Church and assured the lodge that if we rebuilt the post office would continue to contract with us for space.
Aug. 27 - Grand Secretary Charles McGinness meet with Master Donald Jones and trustees Harold Jones, Howard Plum, and Lee Roy Church. He wanted the lodge to rebuild and continue serving the post office. He granted permission to meet at Harry Kennedy’s home for business and use Hepler Lodge for degrees. A special dispensation was granted covering this.
Sept. 9 - Purchased the land the old theater occupied ($150.00).
Sept. 10 - Received blue prints for the new post office.
Sept. 13 - Grand Secretary delivered a duplicate charter.
Sept. 23 - Voted to rebuild post office, lodge hall, and dining kitchen to the best possible not to exceed loan of $25,800.
Oct. 19 - Oscar Masquelier died.
Nov. 5 - R.H. Shireman, Jr. and L.W. Hershberger presented with 25-year pins.

1970

Jan. 25, 1970 - Last rites for John. J. Arnold held at Walnut Methodist Church.
Feb. 24 - District meeting was held in the new Lodge hall with supper at the Methodist church. The Lodge hall was not entirely completed yet.
April 29 - Corner stone ceremony and dedication service held for new lodge hall. The following is from the Erie Record dated May 7, 1970 and the Lodge program for the ceremony:
The ceremonies of cornerstone laying and dedication of Vulcan Lodge No. 220 A.F. &A.M., Walnut, Kansas and of the United States Post Office, Walnut, were held Wednesday April 29, 1970.
At 4 P. M. the Grand Lodge was opened in the building with the dignitaries going through the lodge rooms and coming out the back marching in grand precession following the Girard High School Band to the cornerstone in front of the building. Following the pledge of allegiance, the band played several selections. Walnut Mayor Ben H. Eggleston greeted the dignitaries.
The ceremony of the laying of the cornerstone was under the direction of the Grand Lodge of Kansas with Grand Master H. Jackson Staton in charge. The Reverend (Brother) Hubert Hahn (Walnut Methodist minister), acting Grand Chaplain, gave the invocation.
Items deposited in the cornerstone were as follows: clippings about the Lodge, a list of the 84 Past Masters of Vulcan Lodge, a picture of the first Master, James M. Goff, a list of the present Lodge members, a 75-year history of the Eastern Star to the present date, and booklets from the annual meetings of the Eastern Star and Masons. From the post office a list of the past rural carriers and some current stamps, plus a 1969 50-cent piece from the Farmers State Bank.
Leroy Church presented the Working Tools to the principal architect. Grand Secretary Charles S. McGinness made some remarks. The Reverend Father Robert Watson (Walnut Catholic priest) gave the benediction.
Open house was held at the post office from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. with about 150 persons attending. At 6:30 P. M. a basket dinner was held with a big crowd participating. A floral arrangement was given to the post office and Lodge by the City of Walnut.
The ceremony of dedication was at 7:30 P.M. by the officers of the Grand Lodge of Kansas. Master Paul Houdashelt of Vulcan Lodge #229 gave the welcome. The Grand Lodge officers and Vulcan Lodge officers were introduced. Dedication of the Temple was then held. Singing of Ode was sung by Mrs. Nancy Church, Worthy Matron Walnut Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, and accompanied by Geraldine Clark on piano. E. Dean Kennedy sang a vocal solo. Ned Smith, Potentate, Mirza Shrine Temple A.O.N.M.S. Pittsburg, Kansas gave the address.
Grand Secretary Clara Herdlieka presented Worthy Matron Nancy Church and Worthy Patron Harry Kennedy with the charter and sheaf of wheat, which had been lost when the former lodge hall burned. Grand Lecturer J. Earl Oden gave the response.
C. E. Payne, postal service officer from the regional office at Wichita, Kansas, talked to the group present. Leo Gallagher, contractor, was introduced. It was announced that everything in the Lodge Hall had been donated. Miss Keitha Bohlander sang “Bless This House.” The Rev. Hubert Hahn gave the benediction.
Among the guests attending were eight men from the Masonic Home in Wichita.

Oct. 27 - Final accounting of the new building was given. The building cost $28,224.33. This was paid for with a loan of $17,000 from Farmers State Bank, $5,600 from insurance, and $5,624.33 from personnel and various Lodge gifts.

May 26 - Ryan A. Wheeler, 18, student, raised. This is the fourth generation of the Wheeler and Kennedy family to join Vulcan Lodge. In addition, his maternal great-grandfather, V.V. Murphy, belongs to Rising Sun Lodge, Fort Scott. After closing, a group photo of Ryan, his father-Ken, grandfather-Bill, uncles-Richard and Don, great uncles-Joe, Dean, and Howard Kennedy and Don Jones, and a cousin Tim Kennedy was taken. Ken Wheeler at this time received his 25-years pin.

Note as of 11/18/01, there have been three families that have had four generations belong to Vulcan Lodge. They are the Taylor/Oldham/Wax family, the Shireman/Stephans/Bowles family, and the Kennedy/Wheeler/Jones family. I have color coded these (Jack Shireman married Harry Kennedy’s niece, therefore he is purple) families.

Right Worshipable Larry Mersberg, Grand Senior Warden, and Most Worshipable Stanley Browning, Past-Grand Master presented Dustin with his apron. Dustin is the 19th member and 4th generation of his family to join Vulcan Lodge. Great-grandfathers Harry Kennedy and Ralph Wheeler were Past-Master of Vulcan Lodge, and Great-grandfather V.V. Murphy is a member of Rising Sun Lodge, Fort Scott.
June 10 -Lodge voted to award scholarships to descendants of Lodge members. $200.00 was awarded to each of the following to continue their education: Ryan Wheeler attending Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas; Dustin Wheeler attending Coffeyville Community College; Leah Shireman, Michael Delange, Heather Ann Harmon, Patrick Schiefelbein, and Niki Schiefelbein attending Pittsburg State University.

April 9 - Kevin Potts, Pizza Hut manager, received degrees at All-the-Way-in One-Day class at the Scottish Rite Temple in Fort Scott. Vulcan Lodge conferred the Second Degree on the twenty-three candidates with the following officers: Bill Wheeler, Master; Mike Delange, Senior Warden; Don Wheeler, Junior Warden, Ken Wheeler, Senior Deacon; Kirk Hart, Junior Deacon, Ryan Wheeler, Senior Steward; Dick Wheeler, Junior Steward. Brother Ken Wheeler gave the Stair Lecture and Brother Bill Wheeler the “G” Lecture and Charge. Brothers Ken and Ryan Wheeler gave questions and answers. Vulcan also filled the following positions in the Third Degree: Bill Wheeler, Senior Warden; Ken Wheeler, senior steward; Dick Wheeler, Third Roughen.


May 23 -Open meeting to honor 50-year members. District Deputy Gary Adams presented Kevin Potts with his apron. Brother Adams also presented Brother Bill Wheeler with the Kansas Mason Award for 2005. The Most Worshipful Lawrence Mersburg, Grand Master for the Grand Lodge of Kansas then presented Brothers Bill Wheeler and Howard Kennedy with their 50-year emblems. The meeting was preceded by a Chicken Anne’s dinner with 66 brethren and guests in attendance. Grand Lodge officers in attendance included Lawrence Mersburg, Grand Master; Sterling Hornbuckle, Grand Junior Warden; Robert Harrington, Grand Marshall; Fred Miller, Grand Sword Bearer; David Covel, Grand Flag Bearer; Lynn Carson, Grand Pursuivant; Dick Ward, Area Deputy; and Gary Adams, District Deputy.

June 6 - Vulcan Lodge received notice that Brother William Gregory, raised August 26, 1927, had passed to the Supreme Grand Lodge in 2004. Brother Gregory had labored 77 years for the craft.
December 3 - Michael M. Delange, 24 student, raised to the degree of a Master Mason. George Jeffers, Mound City, presented the lectures. Lodge also voted scholarships to Dustin Wheeler, Steve Taylor, Patrick Schiefelbein, Michael Delange, Ashley Delange, Andrew Shireman and Kara Burns.
The Lodge membership at the close of the year stands at 32 up 23% since the year 2000.


April 15, 2006 -Open meeting to present Brothers John Shireman, LeeRoy Church, and Richard Wheeler with service emblems. Right Worshipable Jimmie L. Grassi, Senior, Deputy Grand Master, presented Brother Shireman with a 60-year emblem and Brother Church with a 50-year emblem. Brother Wheeler received a 25-year pin from District Deputy Gary Adams. Forty members and guests attended a dinner before the meeting. Also in attendance was William “Buck” Fisher, Grand Marshall, who acted as photographer for the evening and presented the Lodge with a set of prints on disc.

May 25- Open Lodge of Sorrow for Brother Harvey M. McFarland raised September 8, 1942, who entered the Grand Lodge Above.
October 10- Voted to award scholarships to the following: Dustin Wheeler, Michael DeLange, Ashley DeLange, Andrew Shireman, Patrick Schiefelbein, and Autumn Wellington.
October 28- Christian Jackson, 36, Pizza Hut assistant manager, and Dale Shireman, 29, County equipment operator, raised in a one day conferral. Assisting in the day’s events in addition to the members of Vulcan Lodge were Brothers C.L. Price, Savonburg (Master in 1st); Steve Smith, Erie (Lecture in the 1st); George Jeffers, Blue Mound (Lectures in the 3rd and charges), James Stradley (G Lecture and King Solomon), Fort Scott; and Mike Carnes (Master in 2nd and 3rd), Fort Scott. Brother Dale is now the fifth generation of his family to hold membership in Vulcan Lodge.

November 1- Vulcan lodge receives word that our Osage Orange gavel arrived in England and was used to open the centenary meeting of the four “Vulcan” Lodges in England. Below is a photo of Vulcan 3181 in London Worshipful Master Bernard J. Bowen PAGStB, and David Jeffrey PGSupWks representing the Grand Master of England. The dark blue aprons signify a Grand Lodge Officer. Due to Grand Lodge of England rules. photos could not be taken during open lodge, but these were taken in the Grand Temple after the lodge was closed.. The gavel was presented on our behalf to the Worshipful Master at the beginning of the meeting , and it was used from that point on for the ceremony. After the meeting was over the gavel was passed on to the Worshipful Master of Vulcan 4382 to be used at their meeting the next week who will take the appropriate photos at that lodge. Brother Charles Rogers will attend that meeting and will take it from there to Middlesbrough for the next Vulcan 4510 meeting. Note, in addition to the four Vulcan Lodges in England there are two other current Vulcan Lodges, one in Iowa and the other in Alberta, as well as two merged lodges, Colorado and New Zealand. February 10 25, 2007- Brian Wayne Harris and Gary Skinner (courtesy for Hiattville Lodge) raised. Brethren from Hiattville, Blue Mound, Erie, Fort Scott, and Arma were in attendance. Prior to the degree conferrals, Dee Ward, Area Deputy Grand Master, presented 25-year pins to Doug Shireman and Don Wheeler.

April 2 - Lodge conferred last rites on Howard Kennedy, passed away 03/27/07.

Sept 19 - Lodge awarded scholarships to: Ashley Delange, Dustin Wheeler, Autumn Wellington, Melissa Query, and Ali Wheeler. Since 2003 we have awarded a total of $4,300 in scholarships.

June 28, 2008- 60-year pin was presented to Bob Taylor by Grand Master Sterling Hornbuckle. Harlan Green was unable to attend so his 60-year pin was mailed.
Oct 14 - Scholarships were awarded to: Autumn Wellington, Andrew Shireman, Alyshia Potts, Melissa Query, and Ashley Delange.
N0v 11 - Hosted a "Friends of Masons" Night. This allowed us to complete the Grand Lodge "Re-Lighting the Torch" program.

May 23, 2009 - 60-year pins and plaques were presented to Steve Shireman and Don Taylor by Grand Master Roy Sullivan. Steve was also presented with the Kansas Mason of the Year Award. Prior to the ceremony a dinner was held with 47 brethren and family members present. In addition to the Grand Master, PGM Sterling Hornbuckle and GJD Rick Reichert were in attendance.

August 24 - Received a plaque from the Kansas Masonic Foundation honoring Brother Tom Fugate as a Diamond Donor ($1,000).

Sept 5 - Lodge hosted the Grand Masters CHIPS (child id) Program during the Walnut Labor Day celebration. Had 63 children go thru the program.

Oct 14 - Scholarships were awarded to: Autumn Wellington, Kinsey Wellington, Mariah Potts, Melissa Sammons, Vicki Kennedy, Ashley Delange, and Kylie Harmon.

March 27 - Joshua Sammons, 22 farmer and student raised. Brethren from Savonburg, Erie, Pittsburg, Weir, Mound City, and Butler, MO in attendance. Prior to the degree a mountain oyster and fish fry was held.

June 18- T. Wayne Fugate was passed away. After graveside services, the family met in the Lodge fellowship hall. They kindly donated $100 to the Lodge, which we have passed on the Kansas Masonic Foundation Cancer Research Center in memory of Brother Fugate, who was a Diamond contributor.
Sept 4- Vulcan Lodge also teamed up with the KMF to host a free cancer-screening clinic as part of the Walnut Labor Day celebration. From 9:00 am to noon, doctors and technicians from KU Med Center screened 111 individuals for skin cancer, bone density, and (UGH!) prostrate issues. Of the six screening clinics conducted across the State, Vulcan was by far the smallest lodge and Walnut the smallest community to host the event, but we had the largest turnout. The doctors asked us to stop bringing people in off the street 15 minutes early just so that they could finish. For our efforts, we received $1,500 from the Foundation. The Lodge then voted to donate the money back to them in the form of fifteen $100 donations in honor of our fifteen oldest members. In the six years that the KMF has been hosting the clinics we are the first Lodge to ever donate the money back to them.

Sept 11- Vulcan played host to four brethren and two of their wives from Vulcan Lodge #4382 in Alfreton, Derbyshire, England. The brethren returned the Vulcan Traveling Gavel, which had been in England over the summer. The Brits flew into Chicago and traveled to Walnut stopping at the Vulcan Lodge in Bristol, Iowa along the way. While in Southeast Kansas, the group toured Fort Scott, saw a 1st degree in Fort Scott, played golf in Girard, rode horses and in a semi near Walnut, and of course dined on Chicken Annies. On Saturday night while the ladies attended a program on quilting, the brethren of Vulcan #229 opened in form on the 3rd degree followed by the brethren of Vulcan #4382 opening on the 1st degree. The English brethren then presented us with an engraved mining safety lantern and an invitation to visit them at anytime. More photos can be seen on a different posting.

October 12-Awarded four $100 Descendents of Vulcan Lodge College Scholarships. This years recipients are: Mariah Potts, Melissa Sammons, Justin Query, and Carly Lallemand.
